11.45-13.15 PROFESSIONAL LECTURE IN BEEKEEPING
Rogger PATTERSON, West Sussex, UK, President of BIBBA (Bee Improvement & Bee Breeders Association) Roger Patterson from West Sussex, UK, is an experienced beekeeper practitioner, lecturer, and author of numerous beekeeping books. He has been engaged in beekeeping since June 1963 with about 130 companies. He teaches the practical aspects of beekeeping, aimed at simple beekeeping, which include queen bee breeding and improving the quality of bees. It encourages beekeepers to use methods that are not common beekeeping practice, such as breeding queens with one less common method, or the Wakeford method of swarm control. He encourages beekeepers to understand their bees, so that they can take care of them properly. It is the creator of one type of open mesh mat, one with a landing board and one without, which can be easily made from recycled wood.
He is the chairman of BIBBA (Bee Improvement & Bee Breeders Association), which promotes domestic products, related to domestic and locally adapted bees. He is a former member of the Executive Board of the British Association of Beekeepers and Vice President of Bee Disease Insurance, as well as the organizer of lectures for the Central Association of Beekeepers and the National Honey Exhibition. He is the author of the book „Beekeeping. Practical guide“.
Topic 1: „WHAT ‘S WRONG WITH OUR QUEEN BEES“
Overview of current problems with the queens and some proposed ways to solve them. Despite the denial of some experts, many beekeepers around the world are experiencing unexplained failures with queens, such as, among other things, the disappearance of queens and the replacement of young queens during the summer. Such problems appeared at the beginning of this century in large numbers. This is how newer beekeepers see the problem, but they do not realize that it is natural. Little research has been done and the best thing a beekeeper can do is identify the symptoms and manage their bees accordingly. The lecture gives examples of real cases, going back several years in their consideration.
Topic 2: „ROGER PATTERSON ‘S METHOD FOR INCREASING THE NUMBER OF COLONIES AT THE APIARY“
Professional beekeepers and experienced beekeepers often need a constant supply of nuclei, so they can apply a variety of advanced beekeeping techniques. This topic shows the method, where from one strong colony that has come out of the winter, in case of good conditions, ten or more quality colonies can be created until the next takeover. He is also the author of a book of the same title.
